Working Dogs and Outback Adventures

Outback Experiance
Intro: A fast-paced, high-impact session that brings the stockman’s world to life. Nick introduces the gear, the dogs and the day-to-day skills of working in the bush—packed with demonstrations, storytelling and safe, kid-friendly interaction.

Fire Pit & Damper Experience: A small contained fire pit is set up on site. Damper is made fresh during the session, cooked over the fire and served with golden syrup. Students enjoy damper while asking questions in an open Q&A to finish the session.

Boomerangs & Bullroarers
Intro: A respectful and hands-on look at two iconic Australian bush tools and instruments. Students hear the sound of the bullroarer, explore how boomerangs work and learn about the science, history and cultural significance behind these traditional designs.
What kids learn:
The design and purpose of boomerangs and bullroarers
Basics of aerodynamics, sound and vibration
Safe handling and cultural respect and significance
How Aboriginal people use art as storytelling, identity and connection to Country
Build & Art Session – Make Your Own Bullroarer: Each student creates their own working bullroarer from scratch. After assembly, they decorate it using symbol-inspired art, learning that Aboriginal artwork is a form of expression, communication and cultural identity—not just decoration. All materials are provided and students take their bullroarer home.

WORKING DOGS & OUTBACK ADVENTURES
Intro: A high-energy session focused on the incredible partnership between stockmen and their working dogs. Students see real working dogs in action and learn how trust, communication and clear signals are used to handle livestock in the bush.

The role of working dogs on a real property
How dogs respond to tone, body language and command signals
Respect for working animals and safe behaviour around dogs
How teamwork and communication are used in real outback environments
Live Demonstration & Interaction: Nick demonstrates working dog skills, showing how commands, whistles and body movement control direction and focus. Students watch up close and take part in safe, structured interaction to understand handler-dog teamwork in action.

NICK THE STOCKMAN OUTBACK APPRENTICE
Intro: This session turns students into junior stockmen for the day. Through hands-on challenges and practical demonstrations, they learn the basics of bush communication, working dog handling concepts and teamwork—designed to build confidence, resilience and problem-solving skills.
What kids learn:
Entry-level bush skills and stockman responsibilities
How working dogs respond to signals and focus cues
Practical teamwork and listening through structured challenges
Respect for tools, animals and safety in the bush
Challenge Stations & Team Activities: Students rotate through a series of mini bush-style challenges where they work in teams to complete simple tasks inspired by farm life—simulated muster signals, rope placement tasks and communication relays. Activities are designed to be fast, fun and achievable for all age levels.

Ideal ages: Years 3–6 recommended (can be adapted for younger groups)
